    Sapphire jewelry

Sapphires are some of the most popular gemstones, and together with the emerald and the ruby, they are the so-called “big three gemstones.” Sapphires are a type of corundum and, with regard to hardness, only the diamond is harder than the sapphire. It is very durable, and it stays beautiful with minimal care--you just have to be careful to avoid extreme temperature shocks.

COLOR: Although the sapphire has become most popular for its dark blue hue, all corundums with the exception of the red ruby are also called sapphires. Besides blue sapphires, you can also frequently find pink and yellow sapphires. Pink, yellow, and all other sapphires that aren't blue are called fancy. Natural stones are usually treated with regard to their color.

CUTSapphire jewelry is most often decorated with stones cut into a round shape. However, other “fancy” shapes are also used, e.g. ovals (popular mainly in rings), marquises, hearts, or teardrops (teardrop gems look particularly good in pendants).

CARAT: The weight of a sapphire, similarly to other gemstones, is expressed in carats (ct) to the second decimal place. 1 ct = 0.2 g. For jewels with more than one sapphire and for pairs of earrings, we always state the total number of carats of all stones.
