There are few milestones in a relationship that compare to an engagement and the subsequent wedding. When a man decides to propose to his partner, several questions instantly come to mind. How to propose? When? Where? What ring to choose? And once he has the answers to all these, there’s one more tricky question to resolve - how to work out the right size for the engagement ring so that the element of surprise isn’t spoiled? Fortunately, there are a few tricks that you can use to determine the right size of the ring in secret.
How to secretly find your partner's ring size?
- Using another ring that fits
If your beloved wears a ring that fits her well, you could borrow it in secret. But double check which finger she wears it on, since each finger is a different size. You could then measure the inner circumference of the ring at home with a measuring tape or if possible, take the ring to a jewelry store to find out the exact size.
- Get advice from her loved ones
Try casually asking a close female friend or someone in her family. They may know her ring size or be able to help you find it out without rousing suspicion.
What to look out for when determining the ring size
- Which finger the ring will be worn on
Remember that fingers on the right vs left hand may be of a different size. Similarly, the size also varies between fingers of the same hand. - The size of the fingers may change throughout the day
Fingers may swell depending on the time of day, the temperature or level of physical activity. It’s a good idea to consider that fingers may be smaller in the morning and larger in the evening, after moving around all day. If you don’t have a ring that fits that you could use, we recommend repeating the exercise of trying to measure the size in secret. - Watch out for the knuckles
Some people have relatively wide knuckles compared to the rest of their fingers. Keep in mind that the ring needs to go over the knuckles but on the other hand, that it also shouldn’t be too loose on the finger.
The most common ring sizes
The size of a ring is determined by its circumference or its inner diameter in millimeters. The most common sizes of women's engagement rings in the EU are 52 and 53. Ring sizing can vary from country to country so it's a good idea to check the international numbering and use a conversion chart if necessary.
